Math Matrix Micro-Credential

The Lastinger Learning Math Matrix Micro-Credential provides high-quality, flexible competency-based online professional learning for mathematics educators.

Program Overview

The Math Matrix Micro-Credential is a competency-based, math-specific professional learning experience designed to help K-12 mathematics teachers deepen their mathematics and pedagogical knowledge in order to better meet the needs of their students.

Format

In Part 1, teachers learn about mathematical proficiency and how to foster it amongst their students.
In Part 2, teachers dive into mathematics content for grades K-5 OR grades 6-12.

Together, Part 1 and Part 2 make up the Math Matrix Micro-Credential. Each part is a 12-week course, offered once per semester. By completing both parts over one academic year, teachers earn a micro-credential equivalent to 60 hours of professional learning.

Eligible Participants

The Math Matrix Micro-Credential is free for Florida K-12 educators who work in public school districts.

Components

Part 1 — Fostering Math Proficiency

Course description: A foundational course focused on rich and effective mathematics pedagogy. Educators will learn effective strategies to support student learning through five comprehensive modules:

Introduction

Learn the components of mathematical knowledge for teaching, the key strands of mathematical proficiency, and strategies for adopting a student-centered approach to teaching.

Mathematical Connections

Learn how to foster long-term and short-term connections within and across grade levels, as well as beyond mathematics itself.

Mathematics Tasks

Examine the features of rich mathematics tasks, how to adapt them from your curriculum, and how to implement them to promote engagement and deep understanding.

Mathematical Discussions

Learn how to structure and facilitate meaningful mathematics discussions to promote reasoning and student voice.

Mathematical Habits

Develop an understanding of the mathematical habits necessary to foster mathematical proficiency and how to help students develop and sustain these habits.

Part 2, Course Option 1 — Number Sense and Operations (K-5)

Course description: This course supports K-5 mathematics educators in developing their content knowledge and learning effective strategies to support student learning of elementary mathematics topics. The course is organized into five modules:

Whole Numbers and Place Value

Deepen your understanding of number sense and the base-ten system, and explore effective teaching strategies for developing students’ conceptual understanding of place value.

Addition and Subtraction

Explore multiple problem-solving strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems effectively and develop effective instructional strategies to enhance students’ whole number addition and subtraction comprehension.

Multiplication

Develop expertise in teaching multiplication through various problem-solving strategies, such as skip counting, partial products, the area method, and the standard US algorithm, to solve multiplication problems effectively.

Division

Examine approaches to teaching division, from student-invented strategies to formal algorithms, and learn scaffolding techniques to build conceptual understanding.

Introduction to Fractions

Gain foundational knowledge of fractions, including their definition and designing instruction to support fraction development. Learn strategies to overcome common challenges students face when learning about fractions and develop effective instructional techniques to support students’ understanding.

Part 2, Course Option 2 — Algebraic Reasoning (6-12)

Course description: This course supports grades 6–12 mathematics educators build content knowledge of secondary mathematics topics and instructional strategies focused on key algebra topics. This course is organized into five modules:

From Arithmetic to Algebra

Understand the role of algebra in students’ mathematical development and future economic opportunities. Learn how to cultivate key mathematical habits of mind to support this transition.

Variables and Expressions

Clarify the meaning of variables and expressions, and design instruction to support students’ understanding of these concepts and address common student misconceptions.

Equations

Define equivalence and understand its application in equations. Design instruction to support students’ understanding of equations, including how to solve equations using various methods and overcome common challenges.

Ratios, Proportions, and Rate of Change

Distinguish between ratios, proportions, and rates of change, and explore how to teach these concepts through real-world applications.

Functions

Develop a comprehensive understanding of functions and learn how to support students in grasping their structure, use, and applications.

Disclaimer: The Math Matrix Micro-Credential is not tied to official certification. Those who successfully complete the micro-credential can submit their verification of participation to districts; however, it is up to individual districts as to whether they will accept.
