Math Language Routine 6

Three Reads

Purpose: To ensure that students know what they are being asked to do, create opportunities for students to reflect on the ways mathematical questions are presented, and equip students with tools used to negotiate meaning. (Zwiers et al., 201, p.11)

And the Answer Is…

Prior to solving a task, have students anticipate the format (e.g., numerical, number sentence, equation) and unit (e.g., meters, inches serving size, apples) of the solution.

Withhold the Question

When presenting a word problem, begin by introducing the situation and background information. Do not provide the actual question to be answered until you are ready for students to get to work.
