Math Language Routine 8: Here’s Where I’m At

Speaker: Here’s where I’m at is a routine that allows students to check in with each other about their mathematical thinking, and it’s helpful because teachers can’t always make it around to everyone. Here’s how it works:

During the timeframe when students are working on a problem set, ask them to go find a partner or small group and talk about where they’re at. They can discuss a solved problem, one they struggled with, one they think is incorrect, or even one they haven’t solved yet. After checking in for a moment, they can go back to work, or you might pull the class together for a broader conversation.

The goal is to break up long stretches of work time with some movement and conversation, and to have students talk about their thinking, they shouldn’t just be sharing answers.

“Here’s Where I’m At” also allows students to support one another as they work, so they don;t always have to look to the teacher for help.
