Math Language Routine 2: Students on Board

Speaker 1: In any lesson, teachers have important ideas to share. But with the Students on Board routine, you can also plan to use a portion of your front board or your lesson notes as a place to display student ideas.

Highlighting student work values their thinking and can make them more engaged in the lesson. It also lets them share ideas with the rest of the class. Try to incorporate a variety of students’ ideas over time and make sure that students are aware and comfortable with their ideas being displayed.

To open up students’ access to higher-level thinking, you should keep their ideas visible as you connect to other parts of the lesson. At the same time, be mindful to avoid cluttering the board so the displayed ideas keep their clarity and meaning.
